5Wagner Paint Crew Plus Delivers...Paint  Feb 10, 2008 By Lefty Lu "real housewife"
I didn't need it for spraying, but for rolling, and it worked great for that. I was priming my newly scraped and textured ceilings, which were really sucking up paint, and it was taking forever. I wanted something that would deliver paint to my roller without me having to return to the tray for more paint. I debated whether to get a low end professional machine or a high end Wagner and I ultimately ended up with this...half the price.

I hesitated because of the Wagner Paint Crew...non plus version. Reports of needing lots of paint in the hopper to work properly, long cleanup procedure, and reliability issues. I figured that this unit addressed the problem of needing lots of paint in the hopper by the new design; which it did (it was pretty much down to the bottom before it sucked in air). And then I figured that those who didn't complain about the reliability were complaining about the clean up. In other words, those who didn't clean, had issues on the subsequent use.

As far as clean up goes, it went well. Yes it takes awhile, but not more than expected. You need to be able to follow directions; at least the first time. After getting used to the machine, everything seemed to make sense. Just be prepared to read the instructions...for both setup and cleaning.

What could use improvement? Well, my roller attachment that came with the unit was a bit out of round. It was a little bit bulged in the middle, which made putting the paint down a little more difficult. Many people also complained about needing a swivel attachment on the gun handle. I took their word for it and bought one just to be on the safe side; and yes, it is a must have (~$25).

Last thoughts/summary.
-Read manual
-Spend time to cleanup.
-I didn't use the spray nozzle...just the roller.
-Good for large area. Small area isn't worth the clean-up time.
-Would highly recommend

5Well Worth Every Penny !!  Apr 09, 2008 By Kari Seiler
Let me tell you about my day yesterday. I started painting our 150+ feet of gothic top picket fence with a brush and roller. It took me two and a half hours to paint one 8-foot section and a gate, both sides, two coats. I sat on the steps and thought, this is miserable. By 3:30 that afternoon, I was happily setting up my new Wagner Paint Crew. At 6:00 I had finished spraying the entire fence on both sides. I made a quick trip to the store to buy more paint, and by 8:00 I had finished a quick second coat on everything I had painted, PLUS I had also painted all of my white wicker lawn furniture. And it all looks GREAT. One of my neighbors actually came over and said it looked like I had replaced the fence with one of the new solid color vinyl ones. (Actually, I think it looks better than vinyl.) This machine is amazing. Here's why:

1. You pour the paint directly into a hopper-- It holds a gallon+ at a time--and you don't have to dilute It. My fence project used a latex solid color stain, but the instructions say you can use oil based paints and stains as well.

2. The unit maintains pressure as well as an air compressor would. The high quality sprayer nozzle delivers a micro-aerosolized output that covers beautifully. No runs, drips, or missed spots--and it lays down a ton of paint with every pass.

3. Standby mode: If you have a wet cloth and a ziplock baggie for the spray nozzle, you can put this sprayer away for up to 16 hours without worrying about the paint hardening. Now THAT is a blessing. No more cleaning your sprayer if you have a job that lasts more than a day!

This sprayer literally saved me. It would have taken a month of weekends to accomplish what I finished in one day with the Wagner Paint Crew.

A few things to consider:

The amount of overspray is formidable. In my case, I was painting a picket fence, so there was a lot of open space in between what was catching the paint. If you're in this situation, my advice is to wear a hat and sunglasses. Without realizing it, I wound up with so much overspray in my hair my kids said I looked like a little old lady with white hair!

Make sure you read the instruction book before you start. Yes, it may look self explanatory, but there are a few things in there you have to know before you hit the ON button. In my case, this involved specific instructions for using TWO wrenches to tighten the fittings. You really need to do this, because the machine puts out a lot of pressure. (My first 1/2 gallon went on the ground at the hopper because of this).

Don't underestimate the amount of paint this thing will use to complete a project -- and there is some waste. I used a full seven gallons of undiluted paint. It's good that you can leave it without cleaning it while you make a run to the store, but it's better if you don't have to.

Buy the optional swivel attachment. It's a must have.

Make sure you move everything that you don't want paint on, like your mailbox, gate hardware, THE DOG... There's nothing selective about the spraying process. If it's in front of your nozzle, it's going to get painted.

I haven't used the roller that came with the machine, but I can tell you that I would NOT attempt to spray anything indoors with the sprayer. It's not like using a can of spray paint. Also, this unit isn't for small jobs. It's made to handle one gallon after another. All day long.

1Updated my opinion.  Aug 12, 2008 By Smiley "Library Lori"
I bought this to paint the inside of a shop I built. I read through the manual and tried to use it. I was using a primer that I had thinned with water but it still clogged. After thinning and trying a couple more times and going through the process of cleaning the filter I finally called the store where I bought it. They said "oh ya!, you have a fine mesh filter you need a more coarse one." I said what else. They said I should get a strainer for lumps that may be in the primer (there were no lumps in the strainer). So I made the 10 mile trip back to get the new filter that I thought should have been in the box where the manual was, the manual that made no mention of any of these problems. I installed the new filter and after a couple false starts (I had to remove and clean or reseat the nozzle) I finally got it to work (for 2 walls). I was just getting the hang of it when the pump/motor died. I had even been willing to deal with the splatter drops ( I figured it was from the primer being so thinned out. But this was the final straw. I'm taking it back to get my money back. I would keep it to paint my house and stain my deck but too many other people have had too many hardware failures for me to take a chance. Worst tool experience I've had.
8/23/08 This is an update. I returned the failed unit and after talking with the store personnel and Wagner Tech. Support I learned what I should have learned before using it the first time. You need to learn about filters/spray tips/paint and limits of the sprayer. This sprayer comes with a fine mesh 100 filter and a .015 inch tip. I found out the primer I was trying to spray requires a .021 inch tip and coarser 50 mesh filter.
These are available for the sprayer that is 2 models up from this one.
The Wagner guy said that my primer far exceeds the capability of the this sprayer. There are about a half dozen different tips for the Wagner sprayers and almost as many filters. You have to match these to the paint and sprayer you have. If you don't you will cause the sprayer to fail prematurely via motor failure, valve failure and poor performance. If the recommended tip size isn't listed on the paint can, call the paint manufacturer and they will tell you what tip to use.
Bottom line, against everyone's recommendations I bought a .021 tip and 50 mesh filter and some Wagner Paint Easy (good stuff), strained and thinned the primer and finished the job. It seemed to work fine but I was told the output valve life would be greatly reduced. The larger the tip size the harder you work the sprayer. I'm told you can drop in a new valve faily easy. Later I put on the top coats and it worked great. It's a good sprayer but not a do-everything sprayer as the outside of the box would suggest and Wagner should definately educate the new owner via the manual about it's limitations. I don't think they mention anything about filters or tip sizes. I would now rate this sprayer at least 4 out of 5.

4Great roller, limited sprayer  Apr 24, 2009 By TTP3317 "Go Sooners"
Please consider my opinion of what you are getting with the Paint Crew Plus as coming from a DIY homeowner .

You get a pump that can handle heavy paints. A tank that holds 2 1/2 gallons. A nice long hose, 25ft. A roller attachment and two roller covers (additional roller covers are $5). A spray tip with two nozzles. A manual that should definitely be studied before the machine is used.

I roller painted four bedrooms of a vacant home (and one is big, larger than my living room) in about 2 1/2 hours. Clean up added another hour. While I was painting the contractor that was working on the kitchen remodel started asking me about it. I finished the first standard sized room in 25 minutes. I moved to the second room and started painting. I overheard the contractor telling his helper he was thinking about getting one. I offered the contractor the opportunity to test it out. He painted half a wall in 5 minutes. He's now going to get himself a pro quality power paint roller.

Sounds like a real bang-for-the-buck painting machine. But I'm giving it only four stars. I have also used the sprayer attachment, twice, and the machine comes up short here. BUY IT FOR THE ROLLER, NOT THE SPRAYER. My complaints about the sprayer are: 1) Paint consumption goes way up. I primed some outdoor play equipment, three gallons. Then I painted the same things with exterior paint, two gallons, without perfect coverage. I began to dislike the color so I repainted the same things by hand with brush and roller with only one gallon of a lighter color and got perfect coverage. Waste probably wouldn't be so severe on something like a picket fence or the side of a barn. 2) Where did all that extra paint go? For a while I had white grass and shrubs. Painting this outdoor stuff was a test to see if I thought I could use the sprayer indoors. Either the sprayer is not good enough or I am not good enough, and I think both. 3) The spray pattern is not uniform. The machine has enough pumping power to spray exterior latex, but one side of the spray pattern was heavier. The spray tip is a simple screw on attachment and when the tip got messy there were even gaps in the spray pattern (to the credit of the sprayer, the tip can be cleaned in just a few seconds by flipping a lever to reverse the direction of the nozzle). I had used the sprayer first, before the roller, and at first felt I had wasted my money. But does anyone make a really good paint sprayer for this price?

Having used the roller now, I have no regrets about buying the Paint Crew Plus, but I paid only $139 for it. I think you can get it every day at home centers for about $180. For a homeowner, this is a speedy roller painter that adds a limited sprayer. If you're thinking about getting a power roller, consider just getting a power roller without the sprayer. just be careful to get one that can pump heavy paints.

And now a cleanup tip. The tank has a spring loaded plunger valve at the bottom, with an o-ring that keeps fluids from leaking out the bottom of the tank. Part of cleanup is taking this apart and washing the paint out of it, a simple task. Unfortunately, when you do this you also wash off the lubricant from the o-ring. The result is the valve sticks and doesn't close completely and fluids leak out. This must be a common problem because Wagner includes a little tool, with a storage compartment beneath the tank, for pushing the valve down when it gets stuck. When you reassemble the valve on the tank, be sure to apply some o-ring grease so that it doesn't stick (get some from a plumbing supply store, don't use Vaseline or regular grease, they can ruin the o-ring).

4helps get the job done fast  May 27, 2008 By Kelley C. Klinger
My husband and I are building/subcontracting our new house so we elected to be the painters! Everyone had told us to get a painter sprayer to prime all the walls with so we decided to get this model- not too cheap not too expensive. The priming went great and very fast! We were priming the upstairs(1300+ sq ft) and i would say i had done it all in less than an hour. The one complaint i had was that the hose that is connected to the paint supply if moved too much(which obviously it is while painting)will come lose and spew paint EVERYWHERE! You have to be quick to shut the thing off or you have a HUGE mess. The next day we were going to paint ceilings in the same area. Some people had told us to definately roll the flat ceilings for better coverage--we did the first coat rolling and it took us about 7 hours. Our arms were very sore --the next day we had to apply the secong coat and the thought of having to roll it again was dreadful! We decided to give the sprayer a try...i sprayed the second coat on the ceiling in about 20 mins.!!!! And it looks just as good as the rolled did and our arms weren't sore. Again the only complaint i had is this time either the nozzle cam loose and sprayed paint or the attachment to the paint holder. We got real good at turning the machine off. The mess didn't matter to us b/c we have nothing but bare floors to cover up but this could be a real problem for others. I just read another review that said the same thing but he got it to stop by tightening the nuts with a wrench, i will definately give this a try before we do our trim this weekend! What a lifesaver- i do agree with others to read instructions carefully- i did and i think that is why we had little problem- clean up takes a while but that comes with the territory:)
